Who is Robert Ellis? At first glance, heʼs simply a smiling, longhaired, twenty-two- year old in a hand-stitched western shirt and Dwight Yoakam-tight blue jeans. But thereʼs more to this youthful Houston, Texas native than meets the eye. The New York Times recently proclaimed that Ellis sounds “equally inspired by Jackson Browne and George Jones.” Not a bad reference point for an artist his age. Ellis cut his teeth performing the songs of similar luminaries around town, most notably at the neighborhood beacon, Fitzgeraldʼs. His “Whiskey Wednesdays” at that club are regularly packed with punkish newcomers and graying locals sharing a mutual interest in artists ranging from Ray Price to Buck Owens to George Jones. Ellis has songwriting ability equal to his encyclopedic knowledge of these greats and it shines on his upcoming New West Records debut, Photographs, due this July. The young songwriterʼs second release is an impressive and diverse concept album split between five breathtaking folk songs and five soon-to-be country standards. Listening to Photographs, one finds it difficult to pigeonhole Robert Ellis. Itʼs even harder to remember that heʼs barely just begun. So, rather than have us try to crack the code of this talented young troubadour, we figured weʼd let Ellis tell you about himself.
On Growing Up with Country Music
Iʼve listened to country music since I was a little kid. I grew up south of Houston and itʼs a pretty common thing here. I was raised going to bluegrass festivals and I think that had a lot to do with it. It was just country and bluegrass music. Itʼs always been what my role models listened to.
On His “Whiskey Wednesdays”
Well we just started playing this Wednesday thing, doing all 70s and earlier classic country. Just having a good time every week and a lot of people started coming out and dancing. It was kind of just this drunken, fun time that snowballed into this big event.
Itʼs a weird cross section of people. Itʼs not like a country crowd by any means. Itʼs everybody. Itʼs older country listeners and young, punk kids- every race and denomination of people. Itʼs really great.
On His Band
We kind of just magnetized towards each other. I first met Will, the pedal steel player. He was the first one I started playing with and I happened to go to one of his shows at this little candy store where he was playing banjo with this other guy, Lucas. I was like, ‘Man, you guys should come over to the house after and we’ll play a little bluegrass.’ He’s like, ‘Yea, I love bluegrass.’ That night we hung out and pretty much have hung out every day since then. And then the other guys...it kind of just all magically happened at one time. Geoffrey [bass], Ryan Chavez [drums], and Kelly Doyle, the guitar player. Everyone in the band is such a good musician. I don’t know how it happened the way it did.
On Photographs
I came up with the concept before I came up with any of the songs, actually. Iʼd written a couple of the songs, but I hadnʼt written any of the ʻB Sideʼ stuff. Iʼd only written a couple of the ʻA Sideʼ songs. That was right around the same time that we started doing our Wednesday country music thing. I had that other record out and I was kind of thinking about what to do with this record. The band had just formed, but with the last record I was really, really happy with the way I made it. Which was just me, mad scientist, with an engineer, doing everything myself. I tracked the guitar and voice parts live and then added really minimal instrumentation. Most of the music that I listen to outside of the classic country genre is really minimal stuff—minimal and to the point without many bells and whistles.
So I wanted to still do that, but I also wanted to make a record with this band. So rather than make two records, I figured this might be the best of both worlds. The ʻA sideʼ stuff is definitely country, but in a different way. The ʻB sideʼ stuff is totally throwback country stuff, but the focus is still the songs. And thatʼs the common thread between both sides. Theyʼre all songs. Theyʼre all uniquely ours. They just have a little bit of a different treatment on them, you know?
On meeting George Fontaine, Sr., President of New West Records
He bought my record at Cactus Records—my first record. And then, he was going to see the Wild Moccasins at one of their shows and walked inside and I was playing a little acoustic set as part of a New Yearʼs festival. He stopped and watched me. I donʼt think I met him that night, but maybe a week later I was shopping for records at Cactus and he approached me and introduced himself. We started talking and developed a little bit of a relationship. It was totally random chance. Around the same time that I met him, I had been furiously e-mailing labels. All of them, New West included. I told him I hadnʼt heard back from New West, and he replied, “Well, now you have!”
On How He Views His Music Relative to the World of Pop Country
A long time ago I stopped really caring what was on that side of the music world. What people consider country music now is so far removed from what weʼre doing. I donʼt really pay attention to it. What weʼre doing is trying to write good songs--make them sound pretty. Obviously we listen to classic, "real" country music and that comes through in our sound. Todayʼs popular country sounds to me like whitewashed, regurgitated, mediocre 70's rock and roll with a southern tinge to the vocals.

Signed to David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, this Newton, New Jersey five-piece trade in skewed instrumental pop and count members of Vampire Weekend and Akron Family as fans. Wondervisions is right- a questing, starry-eyed kind of joy infuses frisky nuggets like 'Flyin High' and 'Sugar Splash,' the latter a dazzling affair that seems to pulse-blend 10cc's glassy lead guitar sounds, Afrobeat, and the sound of Yes circa Going For The One. Analogue synth arpeggios meander Vangelis-like on the cosmic "Z Expression." but it's Marion's characterful, tone-wheel spinning axe noodling that makes Wondervisions teem with life, all the amp hiss, jack static and spontaneity left in. Whether this is post rock, space rock or ad-hoc it's hard to say, but who needs taxonomy when music feels this good? MOJO James McNair ****

Moulettes have been playing together for several years now. After a couple of EPs and singles they released an acclaimed debut album on Balling The Jack in 2010, which found its way on to several Best Of The Year lists. They also won an Innovation Award from the prestigious Fatea roots-music website. Their charismatic, idiosyncratic brand of modern folk music – which incorporates elements of prog-rock, gypsy, Classical and swing – enthralled crowds at many festivals, including Larmer Tree, Glastonbury, Big Session and Latitude, where they played BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction stage.
Members of Moulettes have recently performed and/or recorded with Seasick Steve, John Paul Jones, Paloma Faith, Bonobo and Paul Heaton of The Beautiful South. While ex-Moulette (2005-2007) Ted Dwane, now of Mumford & Sons returned to the fold this summer to help record the band’s second album, The Bear’s Revenge, due out in late-April 2012. This will be preceded by the single Sing Unto Me in mid-March 2012. Other guests on these offerings include acclaimed folk-blues songstress Liz Green, Irish flute and whistle player Ríoghnach Connolly of the estimable Honeyfeet and virtuoso banjo-ist, Matt Menefee of American nu-bluegrass band Cadillac Sky.
Moulettes’ entrancing combination of strings and the celestial; wind and weirdness; rhythm and murder has lead to comparisons with the the Unthanks, Tom Waits and Shostakovitch. But, they have a sound and presence all of their own. Unmissable and destined for the heights.
“This delicious music is played with acoustic virtuosity…Complex and beautiful…Intriguing and unique” **** MOJO
“Divine harmonies…Orchestral folk at its very finest.” ***** Time Out
“The best music I heard [at Latitude] was by Moulettes…” The Independent
“…constant variation and movement which energises and captivates the listener. The standard of the musicianship and vocals is immense…” **** Maverick

Sleep Party People - the bedroom project of Brian Batz - is like one of those fairy tale gems that keep radiating magical colours when it’s dark, that actually grow bigger and brighter when nighttime falls. It’s something special and important and utterly beautiful.
With the aid of an old drum machine, a piano and a guitar, a unique dreamlike universe arises. With traces of My Bloody Valentine shoegaze, Cocteau Twins mystique and Flaming Lips idiosyncrasy the result is hard to define. But who cares?
THE ALBUM
Sleep Party People’s eponymous debut album was received in home country Denmark with great accThelaim and called “one of the strangest and most beautiful released in a long, long time”, “a hazy, dreamy and wondrous debut album” by two of the largest newspapers in the country.
The album is a collection of songs including both piano lullabies, instrumental songs and what seems like pop hits from a strange, better dimension. It has a depth and a grandeur that harkens back to the big dark albums of circa 20 years ago by The Cure, My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive while remaining extremely modern.
LIVE
Taking a bedroom project live is always tricky, so Brian Batz has gone all out: With an orchestra of 5 friends - all clad in bunny masks - the adventurous sound is enlarged and expanded live. The band is at times gentle and at times ferocious, and has - like the album - received 5 star reviews in Denmark.

Richard Buckner announces his first UK festival appearance in support of his new album "Our Blood". “Our Blood” is Richard's first album since 2006’s ‘Meadow’ and the first ever to be released by a UK record label (décor, home of Mark Eitzel and Richmond Fontaine). This coming year will also see the release of the Collusion Ep taken from the album. Buckner has been releasing albums since 1994 when he released “Bloomed” and a few years later his second masterpiece “Devotion & Doubt”. Initially saddled in with the Alt Country movement, Buckner has moved to a far more acoustic, atmospherique sound most likened to Bill Callahan from SMOG

“Buckner remains one of the most intriguing songwriters working” = "Our Blood" Pitchfork 8.0

Despite sharing labels with the likes of ARCADE FIRE, DINOSAUR JR and RICHMOND FONTAINE, and boasting a back catalogue of nine albums with contributions from members of GIANT SAND/CALEXICO, YO LA TENGO, GUIDED BY VOICES, THE MEKONS, TORTOISE & SONIC YOUTH, Richard Buckner remains something of a cult treasure. It’s most likely because he’s the real deal; a classic troubadour in the mould of TOWNES VAN ZANDT, TIM HARDIN or PHIL OCHS, Buckner’s rustic poetry and dreamlike imagery is delivered by “a gruff yet honeyed voice so enveloping that it feels more like a place you go than a sound you hear” - Pitchfork “Buckner’s quavering, cracking voice could fell a cynic at 50ft" - Stewart Lee, The Sunday Time

“The Richard Buckner vibe– and that is a big influence for me. His words are just about a sound and barely about meaning, but I could find all these crazy meanings in there.. .there are lyrics that are totally heartbreaking and beautiful and heavy” - Justin Vernon of BON IVER

"Richard Buckner is one of my favourite singers and this is his best album yet" - Willy Vlautin of Richmond Fontaine

"An Austere Beauty" UNCUT 4 star

Liverpudlian quintet Outfit have revealed a new video for their debut single 'Two Islands' in the run
up to their headline show at London's Cargo on Tuesday 29th November.
It has been several months since Outfit's huge, sold-out 'Two Islands' single on Double Denim. In that
time the band have moved down to London, and are currently working on a debut EP in between
selected tour dates - including their biggest headline show to date at Cargo this month.
Watch the haunting video for 'Two Islands' here:

To mark the passing of time, and close the book on 'Two Islands' the band returned to Liverpool recently
to film its eulogy. 'Two Islands' was written while the band were living in a 23 bed house in Liverpool and
examines the blurring lines of party and after-party, togetherness and isolation. The band went back to
Croxteth Lodge, their old house and filmed their old housemates - the people 'just behind the door'. In
the video their faces overlap and distort into the same image of the 7" sleeve cover. The flickering of
faces are built to feel like the half-remembered faces of any great period of your life.
The video was shot and edited entirely by the band themselves, who wanted to challenge themselves to
make Two Islands a wholly singular, personal vision in every aspect.

Manchester based 4 piece, Driver Drive Faster released their debut
album 'Open House' through local imprint Akoustik Anarkhy in August
2011. Lauded by critics, this lush, layered album found favourable
comparisons to the likes of Wilco, Mercury Rev & Crazy Horse and
cemented their place as one of the most interesting bands to come out
of Manchester in years.

Developing their sound during the summer of 2011 through supports to
the likes of Silver Apples & Phoenix Foundation and festivals such as
Green Man, the band‘s perfectly honed sound now is all stirring chord
sequences, moments of fragile beauty and propulsive rhythms. In other
words, pop music that moves your feet and mind.
