Jonny Kearney is a young songwriter from Hexham way and Lucy Farrell is his Kentish accomplice. They met while studying in Newcastle and were soon spotted by The Unthanks, who invited Jonny and Lucy to open for them on their mammoth 40 date UK tour. "They completely outsold us on CDs every night!" says Adrian McNally, who took time out from The Unthanks to produce and release the The North Farm Sessions. "After each show, there were fresh attempts by our speechless band members to articulate the magic, bittersweet romance, wit and tragedy in Jonny and Lucy's music. We are all in love." Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell marked the release of their debut mini-album with two special shows recently; home and away in Newcastle and London. The North Farm Sessions was recorded at the Northumberland home of Rachel Unthank and Adrian McNally from The Unthanks and features backing vocals from both. Kitchen sink dramas and tales of the heart are played out by Jonny and Lucy with tender, quiet reserve on guitar, piano, fiddle, viola and saw, while Lucy's pure and graceful voice is the perfect foil to Jonny's melancholic tones. Similarly, the unlikely combination of Farrell's English folk upbringing and Kearney's American songbook background has resulted in a quality of songwriting that belongs to the Dylan/Thompson/Waits school, rather than the Myspace corridors of modern singer songwriting.
